Isle of Wight SEN Support Toolkit

7. Specific Interventions

There are a nearly unlimited number of potential interventions which schools could utilise in response to specific needs.  In these pages we list a few key starting points for identifying some which might be useful.  We recommend that:

  • Interventions are carefully considered in the light of the information and advice in Section 4 – Understanding Need
  • Schools make use of evidence-based approaches where there is a clear record of that intervention having a positive impact.
  • A good baseline is established and progress is reviewed against this over an agreed period of time.
  • That all interventions are applied in exactly the manner as prescribed – you have to follow the model in full to see the impact e.g. if it says 30 minutes per day, you must do it for 30 minutes every day.

The SEN Banding Framework  (2908-IOW-Final-SEND-Banding-Framework.pdf) gives an indication of the needs that should be met, and the provision that should be available at the level of SEN support.  This can give helpful guidance for each need type.
